About Muka

Muka (Hawaiian noun) ~ The sound of smacking your lips, done to indicate that you are eating a scrumptious meal.

I like food. I like food a lot.

I didn’t always get excited about dinner. My mum had fallen into the habit of cooking the same six meals on rotation, week in, week out, with a roast every Sunday (chicken or beef) in an effort to please three fussy kids and an even fussier husband (he wont mind he saying this – even now he considers spaghetti Bolognese “too exotic”). I hadn’t had a curry until I went to Uni! I had no idea what I was missing out on.

As a parent to two young children I know how easy it is to get stuck in a culinary rut. You want your children to eat, so end up cooking the things you know they like. Life gets busy and thinking about what to cook becomes exhausting. Dinner time becomes a chore.

I started this blog as a way of bringing my family recipes together. A collection of recipes that work for us, hopefully a few may work for you too. They’re often easy recipes with few processes that can be made with a toddler running around your feet. Many can be frozen – great for batch cooking! Most are not my own but collected from books, magazines, and websites and I have given credit where I can. I try to make our family meals nutritious, healthy, and most importantly, tasty! I hope you agree.

I also blog about family life and have features on independent shops, cafes, and family events in and around Hertford.

If you have a family recipe you’d love to share, or a hidden gem of a restaurant you want to shout about please get in touch, I’d love to hear from you. Be part of the Muka community!
